Estonian-American vocalist, performer and artist Sirje Aleksandra Viise was educated in visual arts and music in Indiana, NYC, Boston and Berlin. She specialises in extended vocal techniques, contemporary and experimental music performance, performance art, and sculpture. In her solo programs and performances, she questions the character of the female performer and the role of the singer in contemporary society. Much of her work is autobiographical in origin, and involves impossible or ritualistic performative challenges.
Sirje frequently collaborates with composers like Vinko Globokar, Simon Steen-Andersen, Alexander Schubert, Jakob Ullmann, Helmut Oehring, Juliana Hodkinson, Nikolai Worsaæ, Dariusz Przybylski, Timo Kreuser, Paul Frick, Genoël von Lilienstern, Kirsten Reese, Neo Hülcker and Arturas Bumšteinas and has worked with ensembles and artists such as ensemble mosaik, Nico and the Navigators, La Cage, Miroirs Étendus, Daniel Gloger, Zafraan Ensemble, Figura Ensemble Copenhagen, Johannes Müller/Philine Rinnert, ensemble unitedberlin, RISK, S.A.F.T., Romeo Castellucci, and Pina Bausch/Tanztheater Wupperthal.
Recent projects include a collaboration with composer Misha Cvijovic for Zafraan Ensemble, DOLLS, a solo production which she presented at Teater Får302 Copenhagen and at Volksbühne Berlin, and will present in Rotterdam in 2021, and EMPTY, a series of paintings and a book dealing with malignant narcissism in historical and contemporary artistic practice, which will be presented in Berlin as part of the art and performance festival Ortstermin 20, “bis hierher und nicht weiter.”
Sirje frequently premieres pieces, tours and performs at, amongst others, the Akademie der Künste Berlin, Ultraschall Berlin, Transmediale+CTM, MaerzMusik Berlin, Documenta 14 Athens, Radialsystem V, Harbin Grand Theater China, Tianjin Grand Theater China, Schaubühne Berlin, Volksbühne Berlin, Teater Får302 Copenhagen, Théâtre de la Ville de Paris, Halle am Wriezener Bahnhof (Berghain), BAM! Berlin, DAAD mikromusik Berlin, PAF Performing Arts Festival Berlin, Estonian National Opera, AFEKT New Music Festival Tallinn, Latvian National Opera, Sadler’s Wells Theater London, Konzerthaus Berlin, Carnegie Hall NYC, etc. as a soloist and as a former member of solo vocal ensemble PHØNIX16.
Sirje has received funding for her solo projects by the Danish Arts Foundation and the initiative neue musik. She was a recipient of an Arbeitstipendium by the Kulturverwaltung des Landes Berlin for 2018.
Sirje is a member of initiative neue musik (inm) and zeitgenössisches Musiktheater Berlin (ZMB). She lives in Berlin.
